PHIMECA carried out a study to optimise the design of a special machine (coil unwinding axes) for which fatigue strength issues were observed.
Firstly, PHIMECA realised a finite-elements model allowing to retrieve the axes yield strength. Static case studies matching accidental loadings were also analysed to identify the fracture origin.

Based on the constraints calculated from the calculation model and the material characteristics (Wölher curve in R=-1), an estimation of the lifespan was performed.
Secondly, PHIMECA studied the fatigue lifespan of the new axes and inserts. Damages after 20 years were estimated in all locations of the model.
